Rio Ferdinand could not believe that Wolves were given a penalty during the epic 4-3 win for Manchester United at Molineux on Thursday night.

The Red Devils were 2-0 ahead when Pedro Neto went down after a challenge from Casemiro in the United penalty area.

There appeared to be very little contact between the players with Neto going down very easily, but the penalty was given and Pablo Sarabia slotted home from 12 yards.

The drama was far from finished there, with Scott McTominay scoring for Manchester United before goals from Max Kilman and Neto appeared to have earned Wolves a draw.

Then 18-year-old Kobbie Mainoo stepped forward in the 97th minute to curl home a dramatic winner for the visitors.

Ferdinand was still bothered by the penalty decision, though, concerned over why VAR could not step in to change the decision.

‘This one today, there’s no contract or minimal contact,’ he said on TNT Sports. ‘I can’t believe they’ve not gone and looked at it on the screen. when you’re in the situation when you can actually look at it in slow-mo, break it down and they’ve still give a penalty in that situation, I cannot believe it.

‘VAR needs to look at itself or look at the people who are looking at the VAR because I don’t think we’re getting it right often enough.’

He added after the game: ‘The inconsistencies of VAR, I’m tearing my hair out. It’s disappointing, VAR’s brought in to help the referees and it’s causing more problems than you want.

‘There’s minimal contact, but not enough to go down, he’s not making him fall down there.’

The decision has not cost Manchester United, with Erik ten Hag’s team climbing to seventh in the Premier League table with the victory at Wolves.
