parenting is harder in the world of narcissism - nurul izzah

SHAH ALAM – Former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar highlighted the complexities of parenting in today’s narcissistic world during the “Inspiring Women Series Tea and Talk” last week.

As a mother, Nurul Izzah cherishes the role, yet acknowledges the challenges posed by the modern era’s self-centeredness and materialism.

She stressed the increased difficulty of parenting in an age dominated by social media and materialistic values.

“In this narcissistic age, parenting becomes even more challenging.

“The influence of social media and a materialistic society add complexity to the role.

“It’s about self-reflection and personal growth, striving for intellectual advancement and humility in life,” Nurul Izzah said.

She also discussed the importance of internal validation and contentment, suggesting that true happiness stems from within rather than external appearances.

Nurul Izzah further highlighted the need for inclusive success for all children in Malaysia, including stateless ones.

“We should work hard so that we do not only ensure our children are successful but all the children we have,” she said.

She believes this inclusivity is crucial to the nation’s broader struggles.

Sharing her recent experience in Tapah with Yayasan Daya Diri and Yayasan Amir, who fund the largest indigenous Orang Asli school for primary and secondary education, Nurul Izzah stressed the importance of instilling values beyond education.

“Looking at the children, not just education but the fact that they have empathy, compassion and care about what’s happening around them and not just about themselves,” she said.
