Perpetual Help eyes NCAA chess crowns

The University of Perpetual Help System Dalta (UPHSD) Altas chess teams barged into the championship round after hurdling past separate foes in the seniors and juniors semifinals of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 99 chess tournament on Sunday, November 24, at the Letran Gym in Intramuros, Manila.

The Altas seniors chess team of head coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas and assistant coach Kenneth Rovillos defeated the José Rizal University Bombers, 2.5-1.5, in the semis to arrange a championship showdown with San Beda on Saturday, December 2.

The UPHSD seniors team, which topped the elims with a 7-1 record, is composed of Genesis Mateo Borromeo, Ronald Canino, Carl Zirex Sato, Romeo Canino, John Marx Anastacio and Vohn Robick Villa.

The Altas juniors team, on the other hand, outplayed the Arellano University, 3.5-0.5 in the final four and will face the Lyceum Junior Pirates for the title, also on December 2.

The UPHSD juniors team, which finished the elims at number two with a 6-1 record, is composed of Wenlan Temple, Cedric Daniel Macato, Khent Lourence Cañas, Wesley Jovan Magbanua, Jhana Rafaela Bañares and John Lloyd Adio.

Tony Tamayo, team owner of the Las Piñas-based team, is confident both teams can bring home the championship trophy.
