Pokemon Fan Shows Off Impressive Gengar Fusions

An inventive Pokemon fan recently showed off their impressive collection of spooky Gengar fusions that combine the famous Shadow Pokemon with other popular creatures from Nintendo’s beloved JRPG series. Gengar was among the original 150 monsters introduced in Pokemon Red and Blue and is the 94th Pokemon overall. It serves as the final evolution in the original Ghost/Poison Pokemon trio, evolving from a Haunter that has either been traded to another player or exposed to a Linking Cord in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. Gengar has appeared in virtually every Pokemon entry and has even gained alternate Mega and Gigantamax forms over the years.

Like most of the original 150 Pokemon, Gengar is incredibly popular among fans – with even celebrities like Detroit Lions Running Back Jamaal Williams paying tribute to the grinning specter that makes its home in Lavender Town’s haunted Pokemon Tower. Many of these fans have created interesting artwork of Gengar, making cookies and pies themed after the Shadow Pokemon and giving their gaming PCs a Gengar-themed makeover. Other artists have given Gengar Paradox forms inspired by Pokemon Scarlet and Violet and custom fusions that blend its traits with other Pokemon.

A talented Pokemon fan creates several Ghost-type fusions and shares the result of their work just in time to celebrate Halloween.

Reddit user and Pokemon fan HoundoomKaboom did just this by posting a series of homemade Gengar fusions to r/pokemon. These pixel sprites feature Gengar merged with various other Pokemon like the original Red and Blue Water-type starter Squirtle to form a lizard-like creature that uses the latter’s shell as a weapon, combined with its fellow Ghost-type Banette into a specter that conjures Gastly to attack its foes, and even blended with Mr. Mime to create a creepy jester-like jack-in-the-box.

Some of the more popular fusions among other Reddit users include the first one shown, which is a cross between Gengar and Cosmog with a glowing grin, and a purple-and-white Gengar/Zangoose hybrid. HoundoomKaboom has created plenty of other pixelated Pokemon fusions using Microsoft Paint, including a cross between iconic Red and Blue starter evolutions Charizard and Blastoise and a virtual blend of Onyx and the infamous digital Pokemon Porygon. HoundoomKaboom often shares this work on the Pokemon subreddit, and their designs are praised for closely resembling the look of the classic handheld titles.

Pokemon has inspired generations of creative artists to create their own monsters and fusions of existing Pokemon, including the original Ghost-type Gengar. HoundoomKaboom’s custom Pokemon fusions provide an interesting glimpse at what Gengar would look like when combined with various other Pokemon species, and many of their fellow fans are curious to see what they will come up with next.
