Shadow Government Services Minister Paul Fletcher says Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen has a “track record of talking big” but the details are different to the outcomes as Mr Bowen signs a new deal with major gas producers.
Mr Bowen has received commitments from Australia Pacific LNG and Senex to supply 300 petajoules of gas to 2030, which is equivalent to half of the annual total east coast domestic market demand, and almost 140 petajoules to the end of 2027, to fix a looming shortfall.
‘Track record of talking big’: Paul Fletcher on Chris Bowen’s new gas deal
These commitments will be enforceable under the mandatory code of conduct on Australia’s gas industry which includes a cap on uncontracted gas at $12 a gigajoule until 2025.
The Greens will move to disallow the code of conduct as they believe it supports new gas fields and benefits big gas users, while the Coalition has not said if it will support the motion.
“The fundamental issue here is that we know that gas is going to be very important fuel for decades to come, both domestically and internationally,” Mr Fletcher told Sky News Australia.
“Yet, Labor has been, both federally and at a state government level, has been making it harder and harder to find new sources of supply to allow exploration to proceed, to allow gas activities to proceed.
“What we have seen now from Mr Bowen is effectively an admission of failure in their policy settings.”
