The zodiac wheel is made up of 12 different signs, but those signs are further categorized by the elements that represent each, broken up into Earth, Fire, Water and Air.

“All four elements are interchangeable and correlate to each other because they give each other energy,” astrologer and bestselling author Lisa Stardust tells PEOPLE. “They represent the complexity of matter, the atmosphere, and existence.”

The three signs that correlate with the element Earth are Capricorn, Virgo and Taurus, the latter of which kicked off its season on April 19.

From their characteristics to their compatibility with other zodiac signs, here’s everything to know about Earth signs.

What are Earth signs?

Earth signs are made up of three signs, Taurus (April 20-May 20), Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22), and Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19).

While these signs don’t sit next to each other on the zodiac wheel, they all are passive element signs, compared to active ones like Fire and Air.

According to Stardust, Earth signs “use the material world for achieving their goals, and enjoy indulgence and luxury.”

What are the characteristics of Earth signs?

Stardust notes that based on the physical and material realms, “Earth signs are known for their practicality, dependability, intelligence, and heightened senses.”

“They find connection through touch and physicality and are responsible, seeing things through to the end,” Stardust continues, adding that they “can be resistant to change,” but are known for being incredibly loyal.

“Earth signs require all the facts and analyze matters before deciding,” Stardust adds, saying “their slow pace can sometimes be frustrating, but they do their due diligence to process information thoroughly.”

Taurus

Being a “fixed Earth sign,” Stardust says Tauruses are “positioned in the middle of spring.” People born under this sign, she says, “possess a strong work ethic and strive to materialize their visions into reality.” While Stardust notes they can be “stubborn at times,” Tauruses are “recognized for their indulgent senses, sensuality, and artistic nature.”

Virgo peaks right as summer comes to a close. Stardust notes that Virgos are known for their “dedication to hard work and a strong desire to complete projects.” That being said, Virgos can sometimes “push themselves too hard, leading to burnout.” Additionally, Virgos have “a tendency to overanalyze situations in order to make the most precise and perfect decisions,” Stardust adds.

Capricorn

In the Northern hemisphere, Capricorn kicks off during the onset of winter. Being “the initiator of the zodiac,” per Stardust, “Capricorns are known for their cardinal sign traits, putting in all their effort to achieve their goals.” The sign is often associated with success and they “possess an intuitive and reflective nature, which they seldom employ publicly,” according to Stardust.

What signs are Earth signs most compatible with?

As Earth signs “share a common goal of creating and working hard,” according to Stardust, they are very compatible with each other. That being said, each sign operates in unique ways, meaning they each have compatible signs.

Taurus: Stardust notes that Tauruses are most compatible with Cancer and Pisces signs. Cancer signs “have a tendency to offer unique insights to others due to their sideways walking approach,” meaning they get along with Tauruses as “they encourage them to think creatively and outside the box in their endeavors,” per Stardust.

And Pisces tends to bring out the better angels of Tauruses nature, helping fight their more critical impulses, Stardust says: “Tauruses have a caring and empathetic side that they exhibit towards their loved ones, and this side is further brought out when they are near water bodies … Pisces inspire the Bull to tap into their creativity and use their imagination while exploring their artistic side.”

Virgo: Virgos get along well with Gemini and Scorpios, Stardust notes. Notably, Virgos and Geminis are two mercurial signs and have the same “innate sense of humor,” meaning “they will always be able to resolve any matters through communication,” per Stardust. “Not only that, but they will encourage the other one to live up to their potential because they are represented by the same planet, Mercury, and always inspire the other one to keep on moving,” Stardust adds.

On the flip side, Virgos and Scorpios both share the love language of touch. “They understand the need to be in communication, and you’re the ones they love the most,” Stardust says about the signs. “Scorpios are just as loyal as Virgos and won’t leave their side no matter what happens, and every Virgo needs a true blue friend who will support them no matter what and offer them a shoulder to cry on, which is what Scorpios provide them,” Stardust continues.

Capricorn: Capricorns are most compatible with Aquarius and Libra signs. As Saturn is the “traditional ruler of both Capricorn and Aquarius,” Stardust says “they tend to have a shared desire for growth and progress.” As such, these signs “have a tendency to form strong bonds with each other and evolve together,” according to Stardust. “Being neighboring signs, they rely on each other for guidance, which makes them great friends and partners.”

Additionally, Capricorns get along with Libra signs as they are both cardinal signs that “tend to make changes with every season, leading the way as initiators.” During the winter and fall, respectively, they “evolve, grow, and make necessary changes,” Stardust adds. “Being able to understand each other due to being cardinal signs, they work together to improve relationships and make strides towards betterment.”

What signs are Earth signs least compatible with?

Though Stardust notes that it’s “crucial to analyze” an entire birth chart rather than “relying solely on the sun sign” to better understand compatibility, some signs might butt heads with Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

Taurus: According to Stardust, Tauruses may struggle to connect with Leo and Sagittarius signs, noting that the two fire signs “can be domineering and forceful.” Stardust adds that “Sagittarius values their independence, while Taurus prefers to be attached to others,” further making them incompatible.

Virgo: Additionally, Virgos have a hard time relating to Aries and Pisces as they each have opposing traits that became very apparent when they’re together. “Pisces is imaginative and intuitive, while Virgo is efficient and direct,” Stardust says, which can lead to clashes. Meanwhile, Aries and Virgo signs “have contrasting approaches towards life,” which can lead to “intense arguments due to their different perspectives.”

Capricorn: Finally, Capricorns are not compatible with Aries and Cancer signs. “Aries often find it challenging to connect as they both have strong leadership qualities and tend to compete with each other,” Stardust notes. Meanwhile, Cancer signs are “known for being emotional and expressive, while Capricorn tends to restrict their emotions.”
