Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the “worst kept secret” in Parliament has finally occurred with Home Affairs Secretary Michael Pezzullo’s sacking.
This comes after a report by former Australian Public Service Commissioner Lynelle Briggs found he had breached the Australian Public Service Code of Conduct 14 times in relation to his messages with the lobbyist and friend of former prime minister Scott Morrison, Scott Briggs.
‘Worst kept secret’: Home Affairs Secretary Mike Pezzullo sacked over bombshell texts
“So, with Pezzullo’s departure goes one of the most influential people in the bureaucracy, particularly during the nine years of Coalition in government,” Mr Clennell said.
“Government critics say Pezzullo’s department had yet to take action on a million visas when they came to office.
“The suggestion to me out of government sources is his public reputation might not have always aligned with his department’s performance.”
