Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – The Disappearance of Kass Mystery Explained

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom builds upon its predecessor, bringing Hyrule to life and enhancing the game mechanics.
  • Fans are concerned about the absence of the character Kass in Tears of the Kingdom.
  • The fate of Kass is uncertain, with theories suggesting that he may have died during the Upheaval or is simply traveling to seek new musical inspiration in other lands.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom builds upon many elements established in its predecessor, making the world of Hyrule feel alive and taking the series’ mechanics to a new level. Players jumping into The Legend of Zelda: Tear of the Kingdom after playing Breath of the Wild are sure to enjoy seeing how many of Hyrule’s familiar faces and locations have changed between the two entries. However, one character from Breath of the Wild that is notably absent in Tear of the Kingdom is the Rito bard Kass, whose disappearance has sparked speculation among Zelda fans.

It’s clear that a lot has changed around Hyrule between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom due to the Upheaval that has upended much of Hyrule’s landscape and caused multiple dangerous regional phenomena. As a result, it’s not surprising that the world’s inhabitants have been displaced, but the complete absence of Kass has players concerned about the character’s safety. With very little information about Kass presented in Tears of the Kingdom, fans can only theorize what may have happened to the Rito bard.

Theories On Kass’ Whereabouts in Teras of the Kingdom

Close

Kass first appears in Zelda: Breath of the Wild as a traveling bard who has left his family in Rito Village to set out on a quest to find the Ancient Songs intended for the hero who will defeat Calamity Ganon. He is the subject of several side quests Link can partake in, helping Kass fulfill his promise to the Court Poet of sharing all of these songs with Link and leading him to the Shrines described in each one. Kass also plays a large role in The Champion’s Ballad DLC, wherein he will perform songs dedicated to each of the Regions’ Champions and work towards completing the Court Poet’s Unfinished Song.

Kass Died in the Upheaval

As is often the case when a character is missing from one game to its sequel without explanation, many fans assume that Kass died during the Upheaval and the rise of the Demon King’s army. The harsh blizzard that engulfs Rito Village and the surrounding area seems dangerous enough that the death of some members of the Rito Tribe seems likely, but whether it was responsible for Kass’ fate in Tears of the Kingdom is up for debate. There is no evidence to suggest that Kass met his end from this event, and his daughters can still be found tending several of Rito Village’s establishments without offering a word on their father’s whereabouts.

Kass Has Traveled to a New Land

The more likely fate for Kass is that he is simply absent from Tears of the Kingdom because he is traveling around the world outside Hyrule in search of more musical inspiration. It’s possible that, after having fulfilled his promise to the Court Poet in Breath of the Wild, Kass decided to seek new horizons and expand his musical repertoire by learning the songs of a new land. While one might assume he would want to return home to his family after being away from them, as he states in Breath of the Wild, the adventurous spirit could have drawn Kass to continue his journey after spending time helping Link.

There is one allusion made to Kass in Tears of the Kingdom, which comes from the Rito, Penn, during the “Potential Princess Sightings!” quest. He makes reference to a famous bard who once perfected his craft in these lands, likely referring to Kass in this conversation. However, the fate of Kass may be left up in the air as no DLC is planned for Tears of the Kingdom, so the ideal place for the bard to make an appearance is seemingly off the table.
